Degauss first, then destroy

Step 1

Degauss (sanitise)

A magnetic pulse randomises the data so no fragment of the drive is readable. This is the step that makes the drive safe — and it works even on dead drives.

Crush (destroy)

The drive is bent, punched or mangled into scrap. Physical destruction means it cannot be rebuilt, resold or re-imaged with residual data.

Record (evidence)

Log the asset tag, serial number, date and operator. The T-4, T-5 and T-1.5 give you per-cycle field verification, so the register is defensible in an audit.

Note from Proton: to comply with recognised standards including NSA/DoD regulations, a degausser must be used prior to destroying hard drives. It is possible to recover data from a mere piece of a hard drive that has not been degaussed.

Do I need a crusher if I already own a degausser?

Not strictly for magnetic media — degaussing is a valid sanitisation method on its own. But physical destruction is the second barrier most audit frameworks ask for, and it is the only way to deal with solid-state media and with the scrap itself. Nearly every Indian customer pairs a degausser with a crusher.

What is the difference between the PDS-30, PDS-75 and PDS-100?

The PDS-30 is a 3-ton manual destroyer for small sites. The PDS-75 is an NSA-listed manual crusher that bends a drive about 90 degrees. The PDS-100 is NSA/CSS evaluated and automatic, with a manual crank handle as backup if the power fails.

What is a crusher for, if the data is already degaussed?

Degaussing makes the data unrecoverable. Crushing reduces the drive to unrecognisable scrap so it cannot be re-assembled, cannot be sold second-hand with residual data, and satisfies policies that demand physical destruction rather than sanitisation alone.

Can the crushers destroy SSDs?

The PDS-30 can, with the optional SSD kit (chisel tip and SSD crush plate). For higher flash volume, the PDS-88 shredder or the PDS-SSD destroyer is faster and quieter.
